Some PSN Users Are Expericing Major Crashes

Sony's PSN (PlayStation Network) isn't doing too well today, as quite a few people are experiencing some pretty major crashes. The crash seems to be occurring for some when they try to start a game. Some quick forum searching shows that the error code 8001050F is the most common issue.
It's not completely clear as to what the internal problem is, but it prevents many users from playing their games.
On the brighter side however, Sony's official PlayStation Twitter account has recently tweeted that, "We're aware that many of you are having problems connecting to PSN, and yes, we're looking into it. Stay tuned for updates."
I checked to see if I was one of the unlucky ones, but the 8001050F error is no where to found on my system. If your having any trouble I'd recommend to check out Sony's official PlayStation forums here, and an update will probably come sooner than later.

New Zelda, Metroid, Mario and More from Nintendo in 2010

A little while ago Nintendo announced some of their titles for 2010, assuring us that Nintendo will hold a better year this time around than 2009.
Nintendo of America Executive Vice President came out to say this earlier:
“We all benefit if we can keep a pretty steady pace, so the development teams have worked hard to make sure that we’ve got a full lineup this year. If you compare the first half of 2010 with the first half of 2009, it’s night and day. And from some of the things that Mr. Iwata has talked about, and that we will talk about at E3, like Zelda, you know that we’re going to have a good back half of the year, as well.”
I for one am excited again to own a Wii, I hope to see more of Nintendo's AAA titles this year, and a little less of the Wii Fit/Motion Plus stuff.

Heavy Rain Might Become An Actual Movie

It seems that Heavy Rain has caught the eye of more than just some gamers. New Line Cinema is trying to figure out if they want to make a Heavy Rain movie. It's all just some speculation, but considering that Heavy Rain is more along the line of a movie than most other games, this might actually happen.
If they do happen to go through with this, I'd hope they get some actors who don't have the worlds biggest french accents.

In other news: The "Directors-Cut" of Heavy Rain: The Movie has been leaked onto store shelves around the world. Its on a Blu-Ray disc, and features additional "immersive controls which allow you to control the story"...sounds pretty neat.

Mass Effect 2 DLC Pack Announced For March

If you missed the "MAKO" in Mass Effect one...you suck...but other than that, there might be some good news for you here. Bioware has just announced that the next Mass Effect 2 DLC pack entitled, "Firewalker", will be available "late March".
The "Firewalker" will include a vehicle, much like the MAKO, but without wheels (and lets hope better controls). The "Hammerhead", the vehicle's name, will be able to reach speeds "up to 120 kilometers per hour" and you'll be able to shoot baddies with its equipped missiles. 5 new missions will also be along for the ride in this DLC, but best of all, its free! Aslong as you bought the game new, and signed up for the cerebus network that is.
Otherwise you'll have to par-take in EA's new "Project Ten Dollar", and actually drop some money.

Final Fantasy I & II On The iPhone/iPod Touch Now

Square Enix's stealth release of the first two Final Fantasy titles was earlier today. The two games have been "re-mastered" as far as the graphics go, and each has its own unique UI made specifically for the iPhone/iPod Touch platforms.
I downloaded Final Fantasy I right away, but I'm only about 1hr or so into it. So far the controls work really well because of the turn based battle system, which doesn't require me to do any quick button presses on the virtual d-pad. Other than that, the music is the same as the original (brought back a lot of memories when I heard it again).
The one downside is that FFI and FFII will cost you $8.99 each, but for the amount of gameplay you can squeeze out of them, its not all that bad.
I'll have a Micro-Review up in a week, or maybe a little sooner, but until then if your at all an FF fan I'd recommend you pick one of these classics up today!

Get Your Supreme Commander 2 RTS Fix Now

If you weren't able to get into the elusive Starcraft 2 Beta, there's something else that might be able to scratch that RTS itch. Supreme Commander 2 is due out on March 2nd, but a demo which includes 2 playable missions is up right now!
As you might also be able to see the demo is being offered through Steam, but Supreme Commander 2 will also be connected to Steam when the full game launches early next month. There's some Steam achievements too be earned, and Steam will handle off the game's updates, patches, and in-game DLC.
With the new Steam UI, and a lot of new games launching with Steam built in, I can defiantly see a bright future ahead for Vavle/Steam...unless the Steam service gets bought out later by lets say, Zenimax....Who knows.

Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker Was Supposed To Be Metal Gear Solid 5

Kojima Productions has come and said multiple times that Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker is the "spiritual successor" to Metal Gear Solid 4, but as it turns out, that's all too true. Right before E3 last year, Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker was dubbed Metal Gear Solid 5: Peace Walker. In the short trailer shown at E3, you could catch a quick glimpse of the sneaky number "5" making an appearance. Shortly after the video was shown however, Kojima Productions decided that they would save a direct sequel for a later date.
If you're a Metal Gear fan, and especially if you were a MGS4 fan, I'd highly recommend you pick up Peace Walker as it's sure to follow in some of its predecessor's footsteps.

Just Cause 2 Won't Run On Windows XP

Unfortunately, for some, Avalanche Studios' next game "Just Cause 2" won't be able to run on the Windows XP operating system. The reason is becuase "Just Cause 2" is a DirectX10 only game, and since XP doesn't support it, "Just Cause 2" won't run on XP.
Although this leaves out a pretty large size of the PC gaming community, I feel that this sort of change had to happen eventually in order for the industry to grow. At least Avalanche didn't try to make a scaled down, but inferior, version of "Just Cause 2" for XP users, and in that respect I fully support this decision.
If your current PC rig can't run Just Cause 2 for whatever reason, don't worry, its still coming to the Xbox360 and the PS3. I personally think that these type of 3rd person games are better played with a controller, rather than mouse and keyboard, so it isn't the end of the world.
Here are the rest of the "Just Cause 2" specs, if you plan on getting it for the PC, make sure to check them out.

- Operating System: Microsoft Windows Vista or Windows 7 (Windows XP is unsupported)

Super Mario Galaxy 2 Set To Release On May 23

Nintendo's favorite mascot is going back into space, and we'll all get to experience it again on May 23. The long awaited sequel to Nintendo's hit Super Mario Galaxy has officially gotten a release date, and its not too far off.
Along with a release date, Nintendo has also released a new trailer for Super Mario Galaxy 2, which looks even better than the first.

Watching this trailer I got all happy and bubbly inside, Nintendo has sure mastered the art of nostalgia with this new trailer, and I can't wait to get my hands on Super Mario Galaxy 2!

Peggle Night For Free From PopCap

If you like free stuff, which most people do, PopCap has got your back. PopCap is a widely known casual game developer, some of their biggest hits include Zuma, Peggle, Bejeweled, and Plants vs Zombies. Peggle has been one of my favorite PopCap games since its release and I'm happy to say that the Peggle sequel, "Peggle Nights", is free!
Well its not completely free, there is a small catch. In order to qualify for a free copy of "Peggle Nights" you might sign up for the new PopCap newsletter. The main thing here is that it requires a real e-mail address becuase PopCap will send you a verification e-mail first. After you've signed up however, your free to log into your PopCap Passport account and download "Peggle Nights" (a $19.99 value) for free!

Pro-tip: No one said you can't make a fake e-mail address for this one time use scenario...

Brand New Steam UI Update Goes Into Open Beta

Steam, Vavle's digital distribution and community client, has been around since 2003 and it's starting to show...that is...until now. Steam has just gotten a complete UI overhaul, and dare is say it, it looks "sexy".
For starters Steam has gone with the "Apple approach" in a sense that it looks a lot rounder and more user friendly, think Windows XP to Windows Vista or 7. Along with that everything seems to be bigger, the text sizes, the store front, and even your game list icons. This new UI also allows you too see what your friends are up to, for example, on the store front there's a new window which shows the newest game that some of your friends have bought (sneaky sneaky marketing). The new UI also takes some new liberties with Steam's achievement system, your achievements are much easier to get to, so you can finally show off how big of an "E-peen" you have.
Valve has made a whole site to explain every new update in great detail, which I strongly encourage you to check out here. You might also want to know how to actually get a hold of this new UI since it is still in beta, but don't worry this beta is open to everyone. :)
All you have to do is:
*Open your current steam window
*Click on the Steam tab in the top left corner
*Go to settings
*Under the "Beta Participation" segment click the button that says "change"
*Scroll down to New UI, and your done!
Feel free to leave plenty of comments about your thoughts on the new UI bellow, I'll be sure to check them out.

New Worms Title Headed To Steam Soon

Team 17's successful "Worms" series is getting a new installment headed for Steam sometime "soon". Worms started back in 1994 on the PC, and it has been going strong with new games and spin-offs on PC and also various consoles.
Yesterday Team 17's own Martyn Brown tweeted a little teaser message regarding the next worms title.
"We are pleased to announce a new edition of 2D Worms for PC! "Worms Reloaded" is coming soon via Steam. Details & features to follow..."
Being a huge fan of the series as long as I can remember, and a fan of Steam, this is really exciting news for me. It feels like just yesterday that I would bike to my friend's house in order to play "Worms Armageddon" and laugh every time one of use would use the Holy Hand Grenade.

Sony Finally Admits To Over Charging For The PSPgo

It seems that Sony was hit with a bit sense today when Rob Dyer, Senior Vice President of Publisher Relations at Sony, said that "charging more for a product that does less" might not have been the best business plan.
"We wanted to find a way to give the consumers what they want, so if they didn't want to go to a retailer they could stay at home and download [games and content]," says the publisher relations VP. "And we were hoping really to eliminate the piracy issue. Did the PSPgo confuse [consumers]? Yeah, I think the higher price point didn't help matters any either".

"So we're going back and re-communicating, and I'm sitting here looking at multiple decks on what we're going to do this year. You'll see a lot of things coming out from us to better educate and inform the consumer. All I can say is watch this space, because we'll have answers to those questions."

As someone who was genuanlly interested in picking up a PSPgo, but was stopped by the system's high price point. I'm happy to see that Sony isn't trying to cover up its mistake any more, and just cutting their losses in order to lower the system's price.
All of this seems to go along pretty well with the rumors of Sony preparing to "Re-launch" the system sometime later this year. Lets just hope they actually make it seems worth while to own one this time around.

Zeno Clash Now On Retail Shelves Near You

ACE Team's ridiculously awesome first person game, Zeno Clash, is now being offered at retail stores for $19.99.
Incase you missed the Zeno Clash bandwagon, allow me to fill you in the best way I can. Go download the demo! In short its a first person fighting/shooting game with crazy character design and an ever crazier story. If you've ever wondered what a raptor/chicken hybrid looks like, now is your chance to find out.
The retail version is being published by Tripwire Interactive, and it also includes some extra content, "The Pit," which adds new extensions to the game's "Tower Challenges."
If your not into PC gaming, but you own an Xbox 360, you'll have to wait just a little while longer to pick up the Xbox 360's "Ultimate Edition" on March 31.

God Of War 3 Fills Up 35GB On A Blu-Ray Disc

We all knew that God of War 3 would be a big game, both in a finicial and gameplay sense, but we've just found out that the game will take up 35GB on a Blu-Ray disc.
Sony Santa Monica's Director of Technology, Tim Moss, posted a tweet on his Twitter earlier today.
"35GB of goodness. Thank heavens for Dual Layer Blu-Rays".
There's no information on how much, if any, of God of War 3 we will be able to install on our PS3's, but come March 16th we'll find out.
I'll be sure to post more on God of War 3 as its release draws closer, I personally can't wait to rip some dudes in half as the ever lovable Kratos. :)

Jesse Schell's DICE Talk On The Future Of Games

I don't usually post things like this, but I found this talk very interesting, and I believe anyone who's remotely into games will like this video.
Jesse Schell is the founder of Schell Games, a company that works multiple types of games such as Disney's "Pixie Hollow" MMO, and even theme park rides such as Disney Epcot's new "Sum of All Thrills" virtual roller coaster ride. Schell also teaches classes on Game Design at Entertainment Technology Center at Carnegie Mellon University. On top of all that he's a very funny and likable guy, which defiantly shows in the video bellow.

I find Jesse's vision of the future a pretty realistic one, and like he said, I'm very interested as to who will be the "first" to pioneer in that direction. What do you think of Jesse's talk?

New Bioshock Multiplayer DLC Set For March

Even though the multiplayer in Bioshock 2 is probably one the game's weaker links, it seems that 2K Games defiantly isn't giving up on it soon. 2K has just announced that a new DLC pack for Bioshock 2's multiplayer, entitled "Sinclair Solutions Test Pack", will be coming out later in March. The pack is said to include two new playable characters, 5 masks, 20 more trials, new weapons/upgrades, and it will raise the level cap to 50. This entire pack will only cost you $5.00, which doesn't sound bad at all, for the amount of stuff your getting.
Even though this pack is a pretty good deal if your into the Bioshock 2 multiplayer, I won't be picking this one up. The multiplayer still seems like too much of a shoe-in for me to really devote some quality time to it.
How are you guys linking the Bioshock 2 multiplayer? Do you think it helped or hurt the over all feel of Bioshock 2?

GAME Lists A New Rouge Squadron Game For The Wii

The British version of Gamestop/EB Games, a retailer called GAME, just listed a new Rogue Squadron game for the Wii. The game is listed for £29.99, which is interesting considering GAME doesn't list Virtual Console games. If this listing is correct then it could either mean a remake, or a brand new title in the series. Considering the price point, I wouldn't be surprised to see a remake with Wii controls, the treatment that Pikman got.
The entire Rogue Squardon series is one that enjoy a lot, and I'm pretty excited to see a one coming our way.

The Next Call Of Duty Title Will Take Place In Vietnam

There have been numerous rumors about where the next Call of Duty title will take place, and the one recurring location is Vietnam. It started out with Activision looking to license music for CoD: 7, and they were requesting Vietnam War era tunes for the score. Later in the year it was speculated again that CoD: 7 would take place in Vietnam with Treyarch saying that the game would be a lot more story heavy.
And now, there's even more info regarding CoD: 7 and the Vietnam rumors. Activision sent out a casting call for "“voice over/motion capture" for a new game, and they listed some of the character types they're looking for.
A character, Frank Barnes, who seems to play a main role is described as "being part of an elite Vietnam unit, the Military Assistance Command, Vietnam - Studies and Observations Group."
There were also some other characters in the casting call, they included “a fiercely patriotic veteran of WW2… A solid leader, possessed with an excellent ability to assess and respond to any situation quickly and decisively”; Joseph Lewis, a “very physically fit” black man in his 20s; Jason Hudson, a white man in his 30s with “over 15 years of military experience, making him an excellent tactician and mission co-coordinator”; and Kristina Ivanova. a Russian-born martial arts expert and CIA operative who’s “calm to the point of being cold and detached”.
So with all this info out and about, lets see what we already know about Call of Duty: 7.
-Takes place in Vietnam
-Developed by Treyarch
-More Story Heavy
-We know some of the character's descriptions
I guess all that's left is for Activision to announce that CoD:7 will indeed have guns, and that it will sell millions of units.

P.S. That picture is photo-shopped. It has nothing to do with the real CoD: 7

Motorstorm 3 Website Registered By Sony

How people find out about this kind of stuff is beyond me, but apparently the friendly fellows at The Gaming Liberty have found out that Sony has recently registered the domain name Motorstorm3.com. The website was created on 2-19-2010 and it expired on the same day. It isn't an official announcement by Sony, but I bet you'll see a Motorstorm 3 announcement in the near future, maybe at E3.
Considering the succsess that the motorstorm franchise has had on Sony's platforms its not a really big surprise that Motorstorm 3 might be coming our way, but I am glad that Sony's still thinking about expanding the franchise.
I loved both of the Motorstorm games on the PS3, and I'm a racing game fan in general, so this is great news for me. I'll be sure to post any new information I gather about Motorstorm 3 as it's unveiled...until then... Who's up for some Pacific Rift?

Metro 2033 Is Going To Launch With Steamworks

A4's new game Metro 2033, which takes place in a fallout-style underground metro system, is going to be launching with Steam. What this means is that it will require Steam to be installed onto your computer, regardless if you buy a retail copy. Metro 2033 isn't the first game to venture down this path, Unreal Tournament 3 and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 required a Steam installation as well.
It seems to be a growing trend to have Steam/Valve handle a games updating and patching process. I for one am all for Steam doing the more technical aspects of digital game sales. It doesn't require for studios to get a whole separate team, and they can also spend more time cranking out actual content.
I guess its just another step the fully digital future, which doesn't seem to be too far away.

Farmville Has Over 80 Million Users

I never thought I'd see the day when Facebook games actually over run full PC/Mac games, but it turns out, it happened. Zynga's super addictive Farmville has recently surpasses 80 million players...80 MILLION PLAYERS! That's almost the population of Germany!
I never jumped on the Farmville, or any Facebook game, bandwagon myself but it sure seems like I'm in the minority there. Its interesting to see the rapid growth of social gaming over the past years, and you can bet that it will only get stronger with every major publisher trying to explore the social gaming front.
I'm still waiting for a Facebook app that will block all the pesky social gaming invites, but with these kinds of numbers, that app might overload in less that .02 seconds.

Final Fantasy VII Remake A "Possibility"

Final Fantasy VII is considered by most to be the best in the entire Final Fantasy series, and so its no surprise that fans have been asking for a remake. It seems whenever there's a new Final Fantasy nearing release, this debate for an FFVII remake comes up. It usually ends with Square Enix saying that they want to explore newer concepts rather than remake an old title, but this time we're getting a different answer. Earlier this week Producer of FFXIII, and Director of FFVII, gave the fans a little bit of hope.
"If it were possible that we had all the right facilities and the right environment to be able to make and prepare a Final Fantasy VII remake within a year, we'd very much like a go at it! But even Final Fantasy XIII has taken over three and a half years to create. If we were to recreate Final Fantasy VII with the same level of graphical detail as you see in Final Fantasy XIII, we'd imagine that that would take as much as three or four times longer than the three and a half years it has taken to put this Final Fantasy together! So it's looking pretty unrealistic! But if any such situation came about by any remote chance, then yes, we'd do it!"
Although its far from certain, its nice to know that Square Enix is keeping the idea in the back of their mind. Maybe in a couple years we'll get a FFVII remake, or maybe we wont. The real question to me however, is this. Why would you really want an FFVII remake? To me FFVII wasn't about the graphics, but rather about the awesome combat system and the fantastic story.
I think that FFVII has earned its place in gaming history a classic, and so people aren't expecting such an old game to compete with games of this generation as far as graphics go. What do you think?

Borderlands Has Now Sold 3 Million Units

Borderlands got a new tag line at the end of last year, Best selling new IP of 2009. It turns out that 2009 wasn't the only year that Borderlands was doing well, because its still selling... a lot!
Randy Pitchford, CEO and Founder of Gearbox, has said that the newest numbers for Borderlands are upwards of 3 million units sold.
Gearbox has also been supporting their game very well with new DLC packs coming out every 2 or so months. To keep in the spirit of things, Gearbox has just released some new screens of their latest and greatest DLC pack entitled "The Secret Armory of General Knoxx’s". This DLC will add a new tier of unique weapons, new eniemes, and raise the level cap.
You can see with Borderlands alone that a DLC business strategy like this pays off pretty well, and its no surprise to see other big releases doing the same thing, ie: Dragon Age: Origins.
What do you guys think of this? Would you like more depth to your games with DLC, or you would like more stand alone games?

Vavle Is Seriously Considering PS3 Development

Since the PS3's launch multiple studios have been reluctant to develop on it due to a number of hurdles developers must jump in order to develop on it. Valve has been one of those companies. Over the years the only Valve game to make it on the PS3 was a crappy port of the Orange Box. The game suffered from bad frame rate issues, inconsistent multiplayer, and an overall lack of support from Valve themselves.
Several employees at Valve have poked fun at the PS3's lack of games supported by other 3rd parties. It seems today however, that Valve has changed their mind about Sony's system.
Chet Faliszek, writer for Left 4 Dead, said ""Before we do anything on the PS3 we need to be able to support it in the right way," explains the Left 4 Dead writer. "But we’ll look at it, and I’m sure down the road we’ll do it."
I hope Chet is right, PS3 owners should be able to experience some of Valve's great hits sooner rather than later.

Also, Valve had a writer for Left 4 Dead???

Comand and Conquer 4: Tiberain Twilight Won't Have LAN Support

Not too long ago the internet freaked out when it was announced that Starcraft 2 won't have any LAN support. It seems that Activision Blizzard isn't the only LAN nazi, becuase EA's Command and Conquer 4 won't have any LAN support either. As well as cutting out LAN support, C&C4 is also cutting dedicated server support.

Lead Designer Sam Bass commented on this issue, The player progression system works "across single-player, multiplayer and skirmish and all the information is stored in a server. So if you go to another machine -- friend’s house, Internet café -- whatever, you can login with your profile and all the stuff you’ve unlocked is accessible to you there. It all lives on a server so you can’t really do dedicated servers with that."
It seems to be a more popular way to go for companies these days to cut out LAN and dedicated server support. I'm personally not a huge fan of this news, but at the same time, "times are a changin'" and you can't really do anything about that.

Ubisoft's DRM Plans Are A Bit Over The Top

Ubisoft, along with every other game publisher, is trying hard to lessen the piracy of their games. Over the years we have all seen different DRMs(Digital Rights Management) come and go, some terrible, and some not too bad. However, it seems that Ubisoft wants to take the throne when it comes to "most annoying DRM ever".PC Gamer's Tom Francis wrote an article on Ubisofts new DRM for the upcoming PC release of Assassin's Creed 2.
"If you get disconnected while playing, you're booted out of the game, all your progress since the last checkpoint or savegame is lost, and your only options are to quit to Windows or wait until you're reconnected."
It's been known that Ubisoft is a fan of the online verification method when it comes to DRMs, but personally, I think this is taking it a bit too far. I'm sure all of you have experienced a couple of internet connection drops while playing games, but could you imagine what it would have been like if that game you were playing had used Ubisofts newest DRM?
Please, feel free to discuss this topic further in the comments, as I'm sure many of you have a "kind" thing or two to say about it.

"You called down the thunder, now reap the whirlwind".

No Modding Tools In Battlefield: Bad Company 2

Not all of today's news can be positive, and so, here's some negative news. It seems that Battlefield: Bad Company 2 will not include modding tools when it launches early next month. Throughout Bad Company 2's marketing campaign, they have been trying to set themselves apart from Modern Warefare 2 by allowing more player customization on a more technical level. One of the many things that is missing from Modern Warefare 2 is the ability for players to create their own maps. This is something that DICE, Battlefield developer, have always been big supporters of.
However, with Battlefield: Bad Company 2 it seems that releasing the modding tools isn't going to fit in the scheduled time line. Patrick Bach, senior producer on Battlefield Bad Company 2, said that they'd rather focus on making a fantastic game rather than "a buggy game with average gameplay but with modding possibilities."

He did also explain that there will still be a decent amount of user control with the option of changing dedicated servers, “The player can change settings on the dedicated server but there won’t be modding tools included in the retail game".
Even though out of the box modding tools would have been nice, its also good to see that DICE wants to focus mainly on making a kick-ass game versus just trying to 1-up Modern Warefare 2 with player modding tools. I also wouldn't be surprised to see modding tools become available after the game launches, as we have seen with several other games this year.

David Cage Is Done Writing Thriller Games

It seems that David Cage's Heavy Rain will be his last game under the "thriller" genre. Cage recently came out and said this,
"I'm really happy I've done so because I wanted to have a very codified genre that I can really play with, I know where the boundaries are, it's really well defined for me and for everybody and at the same time I can try to play and learn within this space," explains Cage. "Now I think I'm grown up enough to say, OK, let's expand the space and try to see what else I can do with what I've learned."
I for one am always up for people breaking their "mold" and trying new things. I'm also excited to see that David Cage is planning on making more games after Heavy Rain.
Even though Cage's thrillers seem to be very well received, too much of a good thing is...well its just too much.

Fallout New Vegas Will Take Some Time To Finish

Fallout is known for a couple things, the main one being its post-apocalyptic setting, but another is that Fallout never falls short of the lengthy RPG experience. Fallout New Vegas will be no different, today according to Pete Hines, Bethesda’s VP of Marketing and PR, Fallout New Vegas will “take you hundreds of hours to explore every nook and cranny”.
Although unlike the series' previous games, Fallout New Vegas will have more in its nooks and crannies than some dirt/rubble. “Vegas is up and running. It is not a ghost town. It still exists and thrives. There are casinos, and you can go down onto the Strip,” explains Hines.
I had a great deal of fun with Fallout 3, but one of its short comings was that it didn't have enough interesting stuff to interact with. There was a lot of stuff to explore, but rarely would it really interest me. I'm happy to see that New Vegas is taking a little different approach to the Fallout series, and hope that it will become a continuing trend.

"Captain Raynor, I've finished scouting out the area, and... you pig!"

Section 8 Headed To The PS3 Via PSN

Timegate Studios' Section 8 is still headed for the PS3 later this year, but it seems that its going to take a download only approach. When Section 8 launched on the PC and Xbox 360 platforms last year it was pretty well received for its unique ideas, but as far as sales numbers went, it didn't do too well.
It seems that Timegate Studios is taking another unique approach to only sell Section 8 through Sony's PSN Store. Ontop of that Section 8 will also be the first PS3 game using TimeGate’s TGNServer tech, allowing players to host 32-player matches using their PCs.
From what I have personally played of Section 8, I really enjoyed some of its ideas on how to change the FPS genere, but I feel that it could have been executed better. I hope that with the extra time Timegate Studios had for its PS3 release that Section 8 will do better this time around.

Dimps Developing Sonic 4

Thanks to Microsoft's Xbox Live Marketplace we found some very positive info about the latest Sonic title, Sonic 4.
In the past the sonic franchise has been in the hands of Sega's own Team Sonic developer, but this time, it's different. Team Sonic is known for cranking out some of the worst sonic games to ever hit the market, but with Dimps behind the wheel, I now have more faith in Sonic 4.
Dimps is an Osaka-based developer who has made some amazing Sonic games in the past such as, Sonic Advance, and also developed the Rush titles on the DS. If making some of the better Sonic games isn't a good enough track record, Dimps also co-developed the console version on Street Fighter IV.
Overall this is fantastic news for Sonic 4, and for the whole Sonic franchise. This might actually be the game to bring Sonic back to a reputable games franchise...or it could flop miserably...we'll just have to wait and see.

90 Minute Darksiders Demo Out Feb. 25

Usually a demo is 20-30 minutes, or half of a game's actual level. Not for Darksiders however, a full 90 minute demo of the game which covers the entire first dungeon.
David Adams, General Manager of developer Vigil Games stated, “We really wanted to give gamers a true idea of the variety of gameplay that the game offers and so rather than just making a standard 20 minute demo version of the first few levels, we decided to give away this massive level and reveal the true essence of the game.”
It seems that THQ is really trying to break some molds with their release of Darksiders, first the unique codes which offered a free full game, and now this.
The demo will be coming out on both XBLA and PSN on Feb 25th, so if your still on the edge about Darksiders, this might push you over.

Sony's Motion Controller To Be Shown At GDC

This year GDC is going to have many major announcements, and among them will be the introduction of Sony's PS3 motion controller. The last time we saw it, it was code named "Gem" TGS earlier this year. Other than that we haven't had too much info on the device other than a new name, "Arc".
According to the description, the "soon to be released Motion Controller for PlayStation 3 will allow developers to create new game play experiences, by allowing players to interact with their console in high definition using their bodies."
Sony Reps will finally introduce the device to high-budget developers and soon there after, we might actually start to see this thing put to use.

Peter Molyneux Promises He Has Learned His Lesson About "Over-Promising"

The main man behind the Fable series, and Lion Head Studios, Peter Molyneux. Has come out and said that he has now learned his lesson about "over-promising" how his games will actually end up. Molyneux is known for having many genius ideas, but then not being able to actually deliver them in his finished games. This time, according to Peter Molyneux, it will be different.
“I definitly have learnt my lesson about over-promising.” he promises. “There is a ton of work to do for sure, and the team are working hard. I truly believe.”
I'll believe it when I see the finished copy of Fable 3, but until then, I'm taking everything Molyneux says with a grain of salt.

"Whatever it is, it ain't natural. Burn it, boys".

Heroes of Newerth Beta Invites

Well you guys are in luck! I have just received some more Heroes of Newerth Beta Invites from our friends at S2 Games. I was think how I could give these away but I decided since I'm already running the Starcraft 2 Beta Key Contest, that I'd just give these away to the first 6 people who comment on this post.
So gone on and post away! Best of luck to everyone!

More Project Natal Info Soon

Microsoft is planning to release more information about Project Natal, perhaps including its games and even a final name, at E3 this summer, director of product management for Xbox 360 and Xbox LIVE, Aaron Greenberg has confirmed.
“I would say to expect us to share news around E3 time,” he said when asked when the company might reveal the final name of the upcoming motion controller. “But right now, we’re obviously in a codename status.”
“We just unveiled this thing about seven months ago at E3, so it’s an entirely new category of games and entertainment. We are still in codename status, and we haven’t shown any of the actual games. There’s a lot more to share.”

I was getting pretty used to calling it Project Natal, so I'm very curious to see what they're actually going to name this thing. Maybe it will end up like MAG and just keep its codename...

Final Fantasy I and II coming soon to the iPhone/iPod Touch

Square Enix just released this trailer for their ports of Final Fantasy I&II to the iPhone/iPod Touch platforms.
It seems that with every new gaming platform you can be sure that a Final Fantasy I&II port will make an appearance, but this starts to be beg the question, are you finally getting bored of these Final Fantasy ports?
I know I'm not! I'll defiantly pick these two titles up as soon as they hit the App store, and shortly after that, I'll post a "Micro-review" for both of them.

Crysis 2 Is Going To Show NYC Like No One Has Before

The New York City shown in the upcoming Crysis 2 will be unlike any seen before, developer Crytek says.
“I Am Legend and The Day After Tomorrow were unique and both ‘owned’ a version of New York,” president Cevat Yerli explained to Edge.
“Ours, likewise, is in harmony with the Nanosuit. In Crysis we changed that island in ways the player didn’t expect. Expect bigger here. It’ll be a New York City like none in games or cinema.”
“Destruction and scarring of the environment: they’re universal themes that have been around forever. Our take will be unique,” added executive producer Nathan Camarillo.
“It was a large island in Crysis but you weren’t interested in every square inch. There were large expanses, funnels and action spaces, and we’re doing the same with New York. It’s a comparable size.”

I wasn't the biggest fan of Crysis, but never the less I'm still excited to see what Crytek is going to do this time around.

Street fighter IV heading to the iPhone/iPod Touch

Capcom’s critically acclaimed fighter is heading to the iPhone/iPod Touch platforms, complete with art style, 2-player Bluetooth battles, and complete move sets.
A virtual arcade stick along with 4 buttons for punches, kicks, and specials is used for fighting, which Capcom insist will give professional players the control and finesse required to play well. There’s a Dojo mode for training anyways, so you can get used to the way it plays before heading into the big leagues.
So far there's only 2 fighter announced, Ryu and Ken, but Capcom assures us that there will be more comming soon.

Quick Thoughts: Heavy Rain Demo

I have just finished playing the Heavy Rain Demo, which is available on PSN, and I have a few things that I would like to say about it.
Since its announcement Heavy Rain has been a title that I've been very interested in for multiple reasons. First, I am very interested to see what David Cage and his team at Quantic Dream are able to do on Sony's PS3 console, for a technology perspective. I also find the story, the little that I know about it, very interesting and I want to see the character development throughout Heavy Rain. Most importantly however, I want to experience this unique style of gameplay which blurs the lines between a movie and a video game.
Now that I have played through the Heavy Rain demo I can confidently say it is an experience you won't find anywhere else.
The premise of Heavy Rain is to try and solve a mystery murder case through the eyes of several different characters. In the demo you play as a private detective and an FBI agent, both of whom are in completely different parts of New York City where the story unfolds.
Heavy Rain's gameplay is a mix between an adventure game, and some quick-time events. Even for the most ordinary movements, such as opening a car door, you have to move the right analog stick in a way that matches the real life movement of the action.
You're able to move your character by holding down the R2 trigger and then move the left analog to steer him/her. At first it feels really weird, but you start to get used to it pretty fast. The genius part of this button layout is that it allows the player to use the right analog stick, along with all the "face-buttons", while the character is moving.
What really stood out to me was the seem-less flow which Heavy Rain moves at. Every action that you do on your controller feels so natural that I could have almost played through the entire demo without any button pop-ups, and I would have known what way I should move the analog sticks.
Since the demo was pretty short, about 30 minutes, I didn't get to see much character progression but I can tell you that the facial animations from each of these chracters are top-notch. Most of this game looks like a controllable cut-scene in a way that the graphics and character detail isn't usually this clear during actual gameplay.

I'll be sure to review the full game once it comes out, but until then I strongly suggest you all go and play the demo which is out now on Sony's PSN.

Alan Wake Doesn't have An Ending Yet

For the past five years, Remedy studios has been working on an interesting title called "Alan Wake". It's gone through many different changes, from a solid game, to being split up into chapters/episodes. With all that work put into it however, Alan Wake still doesn't have an ending.
"We really feel there needs to be a satisfying conclusion," says writer Sam Lake. "But at the same time, it needs to end in kind of a cliffhanger and we need to open doors for a larger story beyond this one.
"How Alan Wake as a whole will end? We have ideas and have mapped out the storyline quite far, but time will tell. I'm sure it will live a life of its own and things will change along the way. We certainly would like to do more, but ultimately if people want more, they will get more."

I guess this is one of the many positive things about an episodic release on the studios part, they will be able to tune not only the gameplay, but also the story itself to what the players will want to see.

Activision Shuts Down Red Octane

It seems that Activision was pretty serious when they announced that they would be holding back the number of Music game titles in 2010. Activision has just shut down Red Octane Studios, the only staff directly involved with instrument development remaining at Activision.

An Activision representative said recently, "As part of our overall strategy to release fewer SKUs for Guitar Hero in 2010 we are closing the Underground studios and relocating RedOctane to our Santa Monica headquarters under the leadership of David Haddad."

Valentine's Day Indie Bundle Shows Us Some Love

http://theindiebundle.com/If you read my review of "VVVVVV" you'd know that I have an unconditional love for all indie games, and today there's a bundle which contains some of the best indie games on the web, for one lovely low price.
"The Indie Bundle" contains 6 fantastic games, And Yet It Moves, Auditorium, Aztaka, Eufloria, Machinarium, and Osmos, for only $20.
All of the money is going straight to the developers themselves, which means there's no reason for you to hold back on this offer. Being a proud owner of all these games already, I'm unable to take advantage of this amazing deal, but I strongly encourage you to look into it!

Command & Conquer Classics Are Now Free!

Yo dawg! We heard you like free stuff so we gave you some free stuff on a day where you already got some free stuff, so you can play free stuff while you play more free stuff. It seems that EA is following the "free stuff" marketing campaign with their release of the Command & Conquer Classics.
The free games included in this well priced package include: Command & Conquer, Command & Conquer: Tiberian Sun with Firestorm and Command & Conquer: Red Alert.

I really hope this is just the beginning of free games, because I could sure get used to this!
Here's a link to EA's free package, it has free stuff in it.

FlOw Is Free Today On PSN!

FlOw, ThatGameCompany's first PSN game, is free for everyone who has a North American PSN account. It seems that Sony wanted to so something a little "sweet" for Valentine's Day(which is tomorrow by the way), and what could be more romantic than sitting in front of your TV all day tomorrow...

Although FlOw will be free until midnight, its expansion pack will still set you back $2.99. For a price of free however, there's no reason why you shouldn't own this little package of joy.

Uncharted 2 Gets New Multiplayer DLC and Trophies On Feb. 25

Naughty Dog's amazing Uncharted 2: Among Thieves is going to get new multiplayer maps, skins, and trophies on the 25th of this month. All of this content is going to rolled up into one neat little package, which will cost you $5 on the PSN store.
All of the content from this DLC pack is inspired by Naughty Dog's first PS3 title, Uncharted: Drake's Fortune. The 2 new maps will be based of the original Uncharted's first two levels, and the some of the skins include Drake, Elena, Atoq Navarro, along with few more.
Because Uncharted 2: Among Thieves was my Game of the Year in 2009, I am extremely excited to jump back in for some more 3rd person action. Although I'm really excited for this DLC pack, the one thing I would like the most, is new online Co-op missions.
What would you guys like to see in any up-coming Uncharted 2 DLC?

Darksiders Mystery Code Revealed!

When Darksiders shipped, there were several copies which contained a special code, but no one knew what it was for... until now. THQ has just revealed that the mystery code in question is for a free copy of Red Faction: Guerrilla for your choice of system. Either PS3 or Xbox360. As if a  full free game wasn't enough, the code also gives you a free "digital Hellbook disc featuring Darksiders art, videos, and other awesome stuff." There's is very small $5 shipping fee that you must pay, but it's well worth it.
I'm really happy to see THQ promote their games through such clever, and rewarding, marketing. I hope to see more companies follow in THQ's foot steps as free games are always welcomed by anyone in the gaming community.

I wasn't lucky enough to get a Darksiders mystery code, but if anyone has a code they don't want to use...don't hesitate to throw it over this way.    :)
